House Bill Overview

The Republican House budget plan includes a permanent extension of the 2017 Trump tax law that gave substantially more tax cuts to billionaires and left working families behind. Instead of lowering costs for families and workers, it would force cuts to critical programs like Medicaid and funnel billions of dollars to private detention contractors in order to deport hard working parents and caregivers in our communities. This budget will kick working people, children, and people with disabilities off their healthcare and drive up costs for middle class families who are already struggling to make ends meet. The winners in the House Republican budget are the billionaire donors and big corporations who bankroll Republicans so that legislation like this will pass – instead of using your taxpayer dollars to make sure every family has access to the quality, affordable care they need. 

Who does the proposal hurt? 

• Health care costs will go up for millions of Americans.
  • The budget greenlights hundreds of billions to be cut from Medicaid, and raises taxes on Americans who get their coverage from the Affordable Care Act exchanges.
  • Insurance premiums will skyrocket for more than 20 million Americans.
  • Tens of millions of Americans will be kicked off their health insurance. Many rural hospitals that rely on Medicaid funding to stay open will be forced to reduce services or close entirely.Nearly a quarter of Americans under age 65 rely on Medicaid for health care and nursing home care. Medicaid cuts would disproportionately hurt rural nursing homes by worsening care shortages, imposing further financial strain on facilities, and ultimately leave seniors without the essential care they need.
• Food costs will go up for millions of families.
  • The budget would likely  force deep cuts to food assistance programs called SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and school lunch and breakfast programs. Cutting these benefits means millions of people, including more than 12 million children, could go hungry.
  • Millions of Americans rely on the food assistance program SNAP – including 1.2 million veterans, 4.8 million seniors, and 14.6 million children.
• The cost of education will skyrocket.
  • Hundreds of billions in education funding could be cut, putting schools, Head Start programs, and child care centers – and the more than 750,000 children who rely on them – at risk.
  • College and other postsecondary education would become even more unaffordable and out of reach, with student loan costs increasing for millions of borrowers, and potential cuts to key scholarship and grant programs like Pell Grants especially impacting low-income students.
• Scapegoating Immigrants Hurts Access to Care and Local Economies:
  • Trump’s plan to deport Dreamers, TPS holders, farmworkers, childcare providers, and essential workers will devastate local economies and families’ access to care.
  • More than 1 in 4 direct care workers are immigrants, helping to meet families’ care needs by increasing this workforce by nearly 9 million more people by 2032.
  • Nearly 23 million children born in America live with at least one parent who is an immigrant.
