56% of likely voters in GOP-held swing districts want Republicans to vote with Democrats to extend ACA credits, including 59% of independents
Washington, D.C. — New polling from Data for Progress and Care in Action finds that Republicans in competitive swing districts face electoral vulnerabilities if they oppose extending Affordable Care Act (ACA) premium tax credits.
The polling of likely voters in five Republican-held swing districts (AZ-06, CA-22, PA-07, VA-02, and WI-03) finds that 74% are either “very concerned” or “somewhat concerned” about health insurance premiums rising, including 88% of Democrats, 73% of Independents, and 63% of Republicans. Majorities of voters across each of the five congressional districts tested also say that their Republican representative should vote with Democrats to extend ACA subsidies. When voters are presented with a hypothetical where their Republican representative voted against extending ACA tax credits, the Democratic advantage in the generic ballot jumps from +1 to +4 points.

The poll also finds that Republican arguments against ACA extensions make Republicans less popular. When voters are shown Republican arguments and then asked how they would feel about their Republican representative if they voted against ACA extension, the Republican incumbents’ favorability rating decreases. Net favorability rating dropped from -8 to -11 following the fraud-and-abuse argument, and -12 following the abortion argument.

The poll was conducted from December 5-9 among 2,205 likely voters by Data for Progress. You can read the full brief here. The poll was commissioned by Care in Action, a nonprofit, nonpartisan group dedicated to fighting for dignity and fairness for the millions of domestic workers in the United States.
