In Critical Moment for Working Families, Care in Action Endorses Janeese Lewis George for Mayor of Washington, D.C.

Domestic workers vote unanimously to back her after a member-led endorsement process.

WASHINGTON, D.C.Care in Action today announced its endorsement of Janeese Lewis George for mayor of Washington, D.C., following a member-led process driven by domestic workers in the District.

The endorsement reflects the leadership and political power of domestic workers who know firsthand what working families need from city leaders: affordable care, dignity on the job, strong worker protections, and a city where immigrant and working-class communities can thrive.

“Domestic workers know what it means to fight for our families, our dignity and our future, and they also know what real leadership looks like,” said Alana Eichner, Director of Care in Action D.C. “Care in Action is proud to endorse Janeese Lewis George for mayor because she has shown that she understands the lives of working people and is prepared to fight for a city where care, safety for immigrant families and opportunity are within reach for all of us.”

Washington, D.C., is home to nearly 4,000 domestic workers. Care in Action’s endorsement was decided unanimously by a worker endorsement committee made up of domestic workers from the District. Worker leaders pointed to Janeese Lewis George’s longstanding connection to working-class communities, her visibility and consistency in showing up for immigrant communities, and her track record of standing alongside workers and families.

Janeese Lewis George is the great-granddaughter of a domestic worker and understands that the exploitation domestic workers face today is rooted in a long history of devaluing Black women’s labor dating back to slavery. As the Ward 4 member of the D.C. Council, she co-sponsored and helped pass the Washington, D.C., Domestic Workers Bill of Rights, fought for funding in the District’s budget to ensure the law could take effect, and championed funding for the Domestic Worker Employment Rights Program at the Office of the Attorney General, which helps domestic workers in the city understand and enforce their rights. She has also been outspoken in support of immigrant communities and recently introduced legislation that would take steps to limit collaboration between the District’s police department and federal immigration enforcement.

As one worker leader shared during the endorsement process, “She understands where we are coming from. She is the one who will fight for the community.”

Another worker leader said, “Janeese is the best candidate because we have seen her in the community, not just at one protest, but in many moments.”

Domestic workers are essential to Washington, D.C.’s economy and to the well-being of families across the city. Yet too often, the women – especially Black women, immigrant women, and women of color – who make all other work possible are excluded from the political decisions that shape their lives. Care in Action’s endorsement is part of its broader commitment to building governing power with care workers and ensuring their voices help shape the future of the District.

In the months ahead, Care in Action members will continue organizing in Washington, D.C., to engage voters and lift up the issues that matter most to domestic workers, caregivers, and working families.
