Care in Action on GOP Budget Framework: Cutting Medicaid To Give Billionaires Tax Cuts is Theft of the American People
Washington, D.C. – Today, Care in Action released the following statement on the U.S. House of Representatives passing a budget framework that calls for massive cuts to Medicaid to pay for billionaire tax breaks.
“As an organization that proudly represents and fights for domestic workers, care workers, and families, we know firsthand just how devastating the Medicaid cuts Republican politicians are calling for would be for our communities. The vast majority of Americans believe cutting Medicaid so that billionaires can get more tax cuts they don’t need is deeply, deeply wrong. In fact, cutting Medicaid would be a death sentence for so many who rely on these critical benefits to survive.
The writing on the wall couldn’t be any clearer: Democrats fought for everyday families while Republicans bowed to billionaires. Democrats listened to the majority of voters across party lines who agree that cuts to Medicaid would be theft of the American people, while Republicans broke promises to lower health care costs to their own voters, especially those in red states who stand to be impacted the hardest by cuts to Medicaid.
We are grateful to the House Democrats who voted against putting billionaires’ profits over people’s lives, and we will continue lifting up the stories of workers and families to fight this legislation every step of the way.
We know that without Medicaid, millions of seniors and people with disabilities will be unable to afford care that allows them to stay in their homes and communities.
We know that without Medicaid, millions of children with serious medical needs–who otherwise might not be able to get health care coverage at all–will lose access to lifesaving care.
Without Medicaid, care workers who provide critical services to families across the country will be unable to continue the work that millions rely on.
Most care workers are not offered health insurance by their employers and many depend on Medicaid for their own family’s health care. Cuts to Medicaid wouldn’t just mean fewer care workers available to support families—it would mean the very people who provide care to others losing access to the care they need to survive. No one should have to choose between caring for others and caring for themselves.”
Care in Action is the policy and advocacy home for women who care, working on behalf of more than two million domestic workers and care workers across America. Among the fastest-growing sectors in our economy, domestic workers are also among the most vulnerable and undervalued. As a mostly women and majority women of color workforce, this growing constituency consistently and overwhelmingly supports progressive values in American political life.
