WASHINGTON D.C.— Following the House vote to pass the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023, based on a deal reached between the White House and Speaker McCarthy, Care in Action released the following statement:
“While we are relieved that a bipartisan bill to raise the debt ceiling cleared its first hurdle with a successful House vote, the country should not have been in this position to begin with. Although President Biden and champions of the care movement in Congress successfully defended Medicaid in this deal – ensuring that millions of people would maintain access to critical medical coverage – this was a manufactured crisis by Republicans that jeopardized the entire country. The debt-ceiling deal demonstrated that the Republican Party is willing to haggle over the care, safety, and well-being of American families. Continued Republican attacks on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance (SNAP) and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) are shameful decisions that push our country backward, allow the wealthy to line their coffers at the expense of our families, and inflict harm on Black and brown communities, women of color, and domestic workers. Just as care is non-negotiable, we must also recognize that we cannot compromise on other vital programs that safeguard the livelihoods of our country’s families. Republican attacks on workers, caregivers, and families carry tangible consequences that make it so much harder to put food on the table, pay rent at the beginning of another month, and ensure that our families can afford the care they deserve. As the Senate takes up this bill ahead of a looming debt deadline, we will continue to do everything we can to show up for families and workers and to ensure that the extremist Republican agenda that led to these attacks is stopped in its tracks.”
